A Birding Trip in a Site of International Importance
A comprehensive survey of breeding shorebirds in a region of the coastal plain of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has found that the number is easily large enough to qualify the area as a site of international importance. For example, more than 13 percent of North America's population of Pectoral Sandpipers breed in the area!
A Birding Bonanza!
A total of 133 species of birds have been observed in the park and preserve over the past 25-30 years. Nearly half of those recorded are normally associated with aquatic habitats.
Birding and a Threatened Species
Raptors inhabiting the park include species of eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls, three jaegers, and the northern shrike. Raptors are more susceptible to environmental disturbance and population fluctuations. Arctic peregrine falcons, a threatened species only recently removed from the endangered list, nest in the area.
