The Alaska Wilderness Birding Experience

The air is clean and alive with natural sounds. At times the night skies reveal unobscured aurora borealis and starry constellations and at other times the sun never sets. Raw stuff that energizes include spectacular surroundings and birding observation that offers unmatched opportunities for photography. Wildflowers dot the sunlit ground where songbirds and waterfowl make the most of the short northern summer.
Our Wilderness Programs seek to capture unusual, exciting wilderness experiences and interaction with the natural environment. Remote and natural settings include solitude as an important quality of the environment that invites a Reality Check, gaining a perspective on life and perhaps how life fits into the greater scheme of existence.

birding trip A Birding Trip in a Site of International Importance
A comprehensive survey of breeding shorebirds in a region of the coastal plain of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has found that the number is easily large enough to qualify the area as a site of international importance. For example, more than 13 percent of North America's population of Pectoral Sandpipers breed in the area!

A Birding Bonanza!
A total of 133 species of birds have been observed in the park and preserve over the past 25-30 years. Nearly half of those recorded are normally associated with aquatic habitats.

Birding and a Threatened Species

Raptors inhabiting the park include species of eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls, three jaegers, and the northern shrike. Raptors are more susceptible to environmental disturbance and population fluctuations. Arctic peregrine falcons, a threatened species only recently removed from the endangered list, nest in the area.
